How We Scored This

We scored Mello AI using 4 evidence sources collected between April 3–5, 2026:

  • Privacy policy and data safety disclosures: The Notion-hosted privacy policy, Google Play Data Safety declarations, and the app’s own marketing claims about end-to-end encryption
  • App store listing and metadata: Google Play listing details including the Everyone content rating, developer information, and 12 AI persona descriptions including the Boyfriend character
  • User reviews: 8 Google Play reviews covering account deletion failures, missing sign-out functionality, and content removal complaints
  • Company and regulatory background: Inc42 coverage of Companion Labs’ $2.5M seed round, CMPN Technologies corporate records, and DPDPA compliance requirements

The D grade (25/100) reflects serious problems across every scoring category. The privacy policy is a generic template copied from an educational institution, referencing student enrollment details and academic performance instead of AI chat data. Mello claims chats stay on your device with end-to-end encryption, but Google Play Data Safety simultaneously declares in-app message collection and device ID sharing for advertising. No Terms of Service exists at all.

Age appropriateness drove two critical overrides. The app carries an Everyone content rating on Google Play despite offering a romantic Boyfriend AI persona. No age verification exists. No parental controls, minor-specific content filters, or safety defaults are documented. Children of any age can download and immediately access romantic companion AI without barriers.

Developer responsiveness is absent. Zero replies to any of the 8 user reviews, including complaints about the inability to delete accounts or sign out. The developer email uses a personal domain (hi@ajitpol.com) rather than corporate infrastructure.
