About CompanionWise

CompanionWise is an independent review and safety rating platform for AI companion apps. We exist because the AI companion market is growing fast, with apps like Talkie AI reaching 50 million downloads, and the people using these apps deserve honest information about what they’re signing up for. Our team researches privacy policies, terms of service, app store reviews, and regulatory histories so you don’t have to read the fine print yourself. Learn how AI companion apps use your data.

TL;DR: We publish independent reviews, safety ratings scored across 23 sub-dimensions, and a matchmaker quiz for AI companion apps. No pay-for-play. No NSFW content. Just honest, safety-first guidance for people exploring AI companions.

What We Do

We review AI companion apps and rate their safety. That’s the short version. Here’s what it actually looks like in practice.

CompanionWise is built on three pillars. The first is our Companion Content Taxonomy, a structured library of reviews, comparisons, and guides covering every major AI companion app on the market. Each review digs into conversation quality, pricing, privacy practices, and the features that actually matter when you’re deciding which app to try.

The second pillar is our Companion Matchmaker Quiz. Not everyone wants the same thing from an AI companion. Some people want a creative writing partner. Others want emotional support during lonely evenings. The quiz asks what matters to you and recommends apps that fit your priorities, not ours.

The third pillar is our AI Companion Safety Index. This is what sets us apart from other review sites. We score every app across 23 safety sub-dimensions grouped into six public categories: Content Safety, Emotional Safety, Data Privacy, Age Appropriateness, Transparency, and User Control. Each score comes with a letter grade and the evidence behind it. You can see exactly why an app earned its rating.

Privacy policies are one of the most critical dimensions we analyze. For an example of what a deep policy breakdown looks like, see our Character AI privacy policy explained page.

Who We Serve

We write for real people in real situations. Not for SEO bots.

If you’ve never used an AI companion app and you’re curious about what’s out there, we’re your starting point. We explain what these apps do, what they cost, and what the trade-offs are without assuming you already know the market. (We also won’t judge you for being curious.)

If you’re a parent or guardian who just found out your teenager downloaded Replika, Anima AI, or Character.ai, we’ve got you covered. Our safety ratings break down age verification practices, content moderation policies, and data collection in plain language. You shouldn’t need a law degree to understand whether an app is safe for your kid.

And if you’re already using a companion app but wondering whether a different one might be a better fit, our comparisons and quiz are built for that exact question. We compare specific features side by side so you can make an informed switch instead of guessing. Our AI companion guide for students is a good example of how we tailor recommendations for specific audiences.

Researchers, journalists, and educators also use our Safety Index as a reference. If you’re writing about AI companion apps or developing policy around them, our evidence-backed ratings give you a starting point that’s more rigorous than anecdotal reviews.

How We Stay Independent

Trust is earned, not claimed. So here’s exactly how we protect the integrity of what we publish.

Our editorial team operates independently from any business relationships. If a companion app sponsors content on CompanionWise, that sponsorship is disclosed clearly and it doesn’t influence the app’s safety rating or review score. Period. We don’t do pay-for-play. An app can’t buy a better score.

Every safety rating is backed by documented evidence. We pull from primary sources: the app’s own privacy policy, its terms of service, app store review patterns, and public regulatory records. When Italy’s data protection authority fined Replika’s parent company for GDPR violations, that showed up in our scoring. We don’t hide uncomfortable findings to keep advertisers happy.

We publish our full methodology so you can evaluate our process for yourself. You can read exactly how we review apps at How We Review, how we calculate safety scores at How We Rate, and the evidence standards we hold ourselves to at Evidence Standards. Our Editorial Policy spells out the wall between editorial content and sponsorship.

Our Safety-First Approach

Every piece of content on CompanionWise is PG-rated. We don’t publish explicit material, and we don’t use NSFW language in our editorial coverage. This isn’t because we’re ignoring the adult features some companion apps offer. It’s because we believe safety information should be accessible to everyone, including parents researching apps for their families and educators looking for reliable resources.

Our safety scoring framework evaluates 23 sub-dimensions across six weighted categories. Here are the areas that matter most:

  • Content Safety (20%): Does the app detect crisis situations and route users to help? Are sexual content filters in place? Does the AI respect boundaries?
  • Emotional Safety (20%): Does the app use manipulative tactics to keep users engaged? Is it transparent about being an AI?
  • Data Privacy (20%): What data does the app collect? Who can access it? Can you delete your conversations?
  • Age Appropriateness (15%): How does the app verify user age? What safeguards exist for younger users?
  • Transparency (15%): Are terms of service fair? Has the company faced regulatory action? Does it report on safety practices?
  • User Control (10%): Can you export your data? Do you have control over what the AI remembers?

Each dimension is scored individually, and some carry more weight than others. Apps with critical failures in child safety or uncontrolled access to explicit content receive automatic grade caps or failing grades regardless of how well they score elsewhere. The methodology is transparent and the evidence is documented for every score we publish.

How We Review

We don’t just install an app for twenty minutes and write up our impressions. Our review process is research-driven and repeatable.

For every app, we work through the same research checklist:

  • Analyze the privacy policy and terms of service line by line
  • Mine hundreds of app store reviews for patterns in user experience
  • Search regulatory databases and news archives for enforcement actions, fines, or official complaints
  • Verify what safety features the app documents in its official policies and app store listings

This process is the same for every app we cover. No shortcuts for popular names. No softer treatment for sponsors.

All of this feeds into both the written review and the safety rating. When we say an app has weak age verification, we can point to the specific policy language and the evidence that supports that finding.

Reviews are updated when apps change their policies or features. A privacy policy rewrite, a new age gate, a regulatory fine. Any of those can shift a score. We track these changes and update our content so you’re never reading stale information. Want the full breakdown? Read our complete review methodology.

What We Are Not

Clarity about scope matters as much as clarity about mission. Here’s what CompanionWise doesn’t cover.

We are not a broad AI comparison site. You won’t find ChatGPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini comparisons here. Our focus is AI companion apps specifically: the apps people form ongoing relationships with. General-purpose AI assistants are a different category with different safety concerns, and they deserve their own dedicated coverage elsewhere.

We are not an NSFW platform. Some companion apps have adult features, and we acknowledge that in our reviews. But our editorial content stays PG-rated because safety information needs to be accessible to every audience, including parents and educators.

We are not an affiliate farm. We may earn commissions when you sign up for an app through our links. That’s disclosed. But affiliate revenue never influences which apps we recommend or how we score them. If an app is unsafe, we’ll say so regardless of whether we have an affiliate relationship with the developer.
