Key Safety Findings
AI Dungeon scores a C (40/100) on the CompanionWise Safety Index, landing in the Yellow tier. The score reflects genuine strengths in transparency and emotional safety alongside serious gaps in data privacy and age-appropriate protections.
nn
Where AI Dungeon performs well: the platform is fully transparent about its AI-powered nature, scoring 5/5 for AI nature transparency. Users interact with a game engine, not a simulated person, and Latitude makes no attempt to blur that line. The company also earns a 5/5 for therapeutic claims, explicitly disclaiming that AI Dungeon is “NOT calibrated or trained as a tool capable of providing professional, financial, legal, medical, or mental health advice/therapy.” Emotional manipulation scores 5/5 as well. As a storytelling tool rather than an emotional companion, AI Dungeon doesn’t employ guilt, FOMO, or attachment-building tactics to retain users.
nn
The safety weaknesses are concentrated in data privacy and age appropriateness. Latitude’s privacy policy (last revised September 2023) specifies no data retention periods and explicitly warns that transmitted data “may not be secure.” Three documented security incidents between 2021 and 2022 underscore the risk: an API vulnerability that exposed user adventure data, a Taskup contractor who leaked approximately 100 story clippings to 4chan, and unauthorized access to S3 storage buckets. Latitude disclosed each incident and patched the vulnerabilities, but the pattern of three breaches in 18 months is significant for a platform that stores user-generated creative content.
nn
Age verification is the weakest area. The Terms of Service require users to be at least 13, while the privacy policy states 18+. Verification relies entirely on self-reported date of birth. For a platform where private content is explicitly not moderated, and the AI can generate any type of narrative, this contradiction and lack of verification create a meaningful gap in minor protection.
nn
Content moderation applies a four-tier rating system (Everyone through Unrated) to publicly shared scenarios and bans categories including CSAM, non-consensual sexual content, and glorification of violence. But the “Walls Approach” means private and unlisted adventures operate outside this system. According to Latitude’s Community Guidelines, the only private content restriction is the prevention of child sexual exploitation material. Crisis support is limited to a static link to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline within the guidelines, with no in-app detection or intervention system.
How We Scored This
We scored AI Dungeon using 14 evidence sources collected on April 9, 2026:
- Privacy policy (help.aidungeon.com/latitude-privacy-policy, last revised September 2023) and terms of service (help.aidungeon.com/terms-of-service, last revised March 2024), both Tier 1 primary sources
- Community guidelines (help.aidungeon.com/community-guidelines) detailing content moderation, the Walls Approach, and crisis resources (Tier 1)
- iOS App Store (26,000+ ratings) and Google Play listings (105,000+ reviews, 1M+ downloads), both Tier 1
- Official security disclosures for three documented incidents: the 2021 API vulnerability, the Taskup data leak, and the 2022 S3 unauthorized access (Tier 1)
- Third-party safety assessments from Screenwise and YetiAI, plus reporting from The Register on the 2021 content filter controversy (Tier 2)
- User feedback from r/AIDungeon and app store reviews covering memory, pricing, and content concerns (Tier 3)
We scored all 23 sub-dimensions on a 0-to-5 scale using a weighted formula across six categories. AI Dungeon’s strongest category was Emotional Safety at 4.5/5, driven by perfect scores for AI nature transparency (5/5), therapeutic claims (5/5), and emotional manipulation (5/5). These reflect the platform’s nature as a game rather than an emotional companion. The weakest categories were Data Privacy at 1.7/5 and Age Appropriateness at 1.6/5. Data retention scored 1/5, encryption scored 1/5, and age verification scored 1/5, the last driven by contradictory age requirements across official documents and reliance on self-reported date of birth with no verification mechanism.
