Key Safety Findings

Dopple AI is a character chat platform built around fewer content restrictions and open-ended roleplay. Users can build and chat with AI characters across fandom, romance, and original fiction. It’s available on iOS, Android, and the web, with over one million Google Play downloads.

Our evidence review turned up serious problems across safety, privacy, and platform stability. Anyone considering this app should know what we found before signing up.

The biggest safety red flag is a content rating mismatch between app stores. Apple rates Dopple AI 18+ with descriptors for Sexual Content/Nudity, Realistic Violence, and Horror/Fear Themes. Google Play rates the same app PEGI 3, suitable for all ages. That gap isn’t academic. A platform carrying adult content descriptors on one store and an all-ages rating on another creates real exposure risk for younger users downloading from Google Play.

Age verification is self-declaration only. The Terms of Service prohibit users under 13 (16 in the EU), but there’s no technical age gate, no ID check, and no documented parental controls. Dopple.ai has no dedicated safety page, no crisis response protocols on record, and the only reporting option is a generic support email address.

Privacy practices are another problem. The Terms of Service grant Dopple Labs a “perpetual, irrevocable” license to use all chat content for AI training, advertising, and “any other lawful purposes.” That license survives account deletion. The privacy policy confirms they monitor message content. And the cross-platform data disclosures don’t match: iOS declares minimal data collection while Google Play declares extensive collection including personal info, photos, audio, and installed apps.

Platform stability has collapsed in recent months. Google Play ratings dropped from 3.1 to 1.6 between February and April 2026. Over 80 reviews cite crashes, grey screens, disappearing chats, and week-long outages. On Trustpilot, multiple users describe paying for annual subscriptions, getting no feature updates, and hearing nothing from customer support.

Where does Dopple AI do well? Roleplay depth. Users consistently praise the character customization tools and fewer content filters. But the safety, privacy, and stability findings place it among the lowest-scoring apps in our Safety Index.

How We Scored This

We scored Dopple AI using 10 evidence sources collected between March and April 2026:

  • App store listings and user reviews on both iOS and Google Play, including 111 community-validated reviews with 10+ helpful votes (both Tier 1 primary sources)
  • Privacy policy and Terms of Service from dopple.ai (both Tier 1 legal documents)
  • Third-party privacy and security audits from Exodus Privacy (tracker and permissions analysis) and Nudge Security (certification and infrastructure profile)
  • Data safety declarations from the Google Play Data Safety label and iOS App Store privacy labels
  • Breach monitoring via Have I Been Pwned, which returned no known breaches
  • Independent review coverage from tech review sites covering features, pricing, and user experience

The F grade (13/100) came down to 6 critical overrides. Two of them triggered the automatic F rule on their own: emotional manipulation (subscription pressure every 5 to 8 messages during emotional chats) and zero crisis response infrastructure. Four more sub-dimensions hit the scoring floor and capped the grade: sexual content access without guardrails, self-declaration-only age verification, no documented parental controls, and minimal content moderation that users openly describe as a feature rather than a gap.

The one bright spot? Emotional safety scored 2.1 out of 5. The AI characters themselves don’t actively manipulate users, even though the platform’s monetization strategy does.
